Bent pushrod
Hi guys, acquired a 356 which on delivery was p***ing oil.
A quick examination has revealed a very bent pushrod. With these engines is it likely that the valve has 'kissed' the piston? Not removed the head yet. My guess is that the delivery boys have over-revved it getting it on the loader. Is that a likely scenario? Any and all comments and suggestions welcomed. Any tricks to fitting pushrod tubes such that they don't leak? Thanks Dave |
Bent pushrod
These will bend valves and pushrods if over run but it must have really been run. I hit 7000 with mine regularly. Tubes just expand them back out with new seals should be good. Remember the head bolts also seal out oil and have that goofy o-ring on them to do so.

Is the pushrod bent or the pushrod tube? If the rod was bent enough to cause a oil leak from the tube you may have serious damage to the engine. I assume the tube is bent and leaking, either way the head will need to come off. Check compression to see if a valve is bent.
Use these boards for better info on your car. Porsche 356 Registry 912 Board this board can be used as both the 356 and 912 use the simular engine. |
I bought a '69 912 targa many years ago that ran well but was spitting oil out a pushrod tube. Turned out to be a bent pushrod rubbing on the inside of the tube made a hole in it.
Don't remember a mark on the piston from an exhaust valve or anything but that must have happened. Put it back together with a new pushrod and new tubes and it ran great. |
Thanks guys
Will report back when I have investigated further Cheers Dave |
"A very bent pushrod" or a very bent pushrod "tube"???
As mentioned above, if the tube is leaking oil, at a minimum the head needs to come off. If it bent the pushrod enough to split the pushrod tube, then I would be pulling it apart and checking rod bearings, rods, pistons, etc. Curious about what you find. |
