main bearings - oversize/std - available?
 

I'm having some machine work done to my 2.7L case; shop is recommending line-boring the mains oversized to eliminate some ovality, but can't shave the mating faces first in order to get bores to standard size.

Does anybody have a source for oversize case/std crank main bearings? (My understanding is that these are generally unavailable and prohibitively expensive if you can find them.)

Best practice is to shave the case and then line bore to standard size.

Have you asked your machine shop why they can't do this?

I wouldn't align bore the case.
I've heard of prices like $1,000 for 911 align bore bearings.
The #8 bearing I believe is unobtainium at any price.
For the price of the bearings you could buy another case with some money left over for updates.

Most used 7R cases will have warped bearing saddles and will require resizing.

Align bore the case. The bearing are available from the dealer for just over $600.
Most Porsche machine shops do not bore the number eight main so the #8 bearing you have will work (if it is within specs).
Only the 3.0 and larger bearing cost over $1000.

I am curious...Why not re-size the case and bore back to standard?

The process of resizing the case is expensive, requires longer turnaround time and has it's own draw backs. Dimensioning being one.
Generally a case can be aline bored with little or no issues.

WOW, I guess all this is moot.
The line bore trust bearings (901 101 131 60) are back ordered in Germany.
That may mean, NLA if they have not reordered the part.

I've noticed a lot of parts for the early cars need to be ordered from Germany. I bought a standard nose bearing from the dealer that needed to shipped from Germany it takes about 3 weeks. When buying the line bore bearings the dealer sent me 12 thrust halfs and 2 of the halfs for 2 thru 7 shells, which of course I had to send back. That was Sunset in Oregon I don't know if they still have them, this was a year or a year and a half ago.
