I Split the case today and all looks good. Off to the machine shop for washing and checking spec's.

gibran911 06-22-2012 01:12 PM

Just got the crank back from balancing and it is good to go. Still standard and needed no polishing.
Now to order the bearings and other bits to start assembly.

Good to hear it's coming along. Car looks good. Any idea of the actual mileage on the engine?

gibran911 07-25-2012 05:41 PM

Hello again,

The odometer on the car reads 97197 Miles. Pretty sure that it's correct as the engine was rebuilt once Just before it sat for the better part of 18 years.
The rebuild I am doing now is to clean up those 18+ years of neglect.
Ordered the "Engine case essentials parts super kit" yesterday. Can't wait to get started!

gibran911,
I was wondering how the rebuild was going. Any progress reports?

gibran911 12-16-2012 08:43 AM

Hi Sully,
The rebuild has been on the back burner for a while. I have all the parts and have started to clean pieces for assembly. Hope to get started on the crank and short block this month and move on to the long block in January. Also, need to rebuild all 4 brake calipers so it will stop once it goes!
Will post as I make progress.

Merry Christmas to all.

Hello,

Like the heading says, "Top end rebuild" and thats what's next.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360280955.jpg

Am I correct on the piston orientation? I will check on this to confirm before assembly.

Good to see the progress. I think you were failry lucky as far as the piston rings. Were you able to return the Total Seal rings? I checked with the dealership last month, and they searched, but it seems the 1.75 rings are NLA. What did you seal the engine case with? What are you using in the way of chain tensioner? Cam timing is not difficult, but it takes a little time to get it in range. Get a good dial indicator and mount. Waynes book gives a good overview. I would think you need to use the specs for the 2.7 cams since they were changed by the previous owner.
As for piston orientation, it looks correct. Here is a pick of my 3.2 pistons.

Hu Sully,

Yes, the rings were pure luck and I am keeping the total seal rings - just in case.......
I used loctite 574 on the case to seal it. Will be adding the p&c's on monday and cams soon after.
The engine had hydraulic tensioners and I will be re-using them.
so far it has not been too complicated. this is the second engine I have built(with help from my friend chris) the first was a 1.8 engine from a 75' 914 starter car. Sold that to get the 73.5 911.

stay tuned,

Gib

Started building the top end today. piston, cylinders, heads, cam towers, chain boxes and the cams.
Next come the lifters and cam timing. Will be a couple of weeks before I get back to the build, but time allowing I will be prepping other parts so there are ready to go when the long block is complete.

Completed the process of aligning the cams sprockets and timing the cams. It was not that dificult, took about 5 hours. Will start sealing it up on Monday.

Sounds like your getting close now. The worst part of my first rebuild was those dam circlips. I hope you get to enjoy it soon.
