head stud ?
is it recommended to replace all head studs or just lower ones on a 82 3.0

Just the bottom ones, they are the problem..

Looks like I have the same problem, what are guys replacing the dilavar studs with?

We used raceware studs when we first did my 3.0. I'd do all the studs at the same time, even though the bottom ones seem to be the ones that break. I think you can only buy complete kits. I've also heard people successuflly use the 993 full thread head studs as well.

Supertec head studs offer a number a features not found in any other stud on the market.
There have never been any reported failures and they are reasonably priced. They are also available from our host. I recommend changing all the studs so as to offer the great consistency in the cylinder/head platform. What's that old saying? "Not enough money to do it right but plenty of money to do it over." |
I am in the midst of tearing down a 3.2 for a stock rebuild. Although I have no broken studs, I intend to replace them all. In my case, the exhaust studs actually “look” better. They are dilavar, but coated (which I think was a change made sometime during the SC years). The top studs are indeed steel, but some of them exhibited some amount of corrosion, and it seems false economy not to change those as well, while I am doing a total rebuild.
Given that I am choosing to replace all 24 studs, I will be going with Supertec. Having read too much on this topic already, I am satisfied that they are the best stud available. However, OEM steel studs sound perfectly OK for a stock rebuild too. What pushed me to the Supertec was that the price premium for a full set is not that much over the OEM steel, in the context of a rebuild. 993 studs also have an excellent reputation, but they seem to be the most expensive choice of all now, by a fair margin. If you haven’t seen how your upper studs look yet, it may be interesting to see how much corrosion they have. |
I'm no expert, so I won't call this a recommendation. This is just what I am doing on my 1978 3.0 L engine...
500_19B and I have duelling engine rebuild threads right now over on Rennlist. I suffered a broken exhaust side stud which is the reason I'm digging into my engine, now. I'm replacing my exhaust side dilavar studs with the 993 full threaded, coated dilavar studs. I was not intending to replace the intake side steel studs because they looked fine, but I recently decided to go ahead and replace them. Right now I'm leaning toward OEM steel again for the intake side. At just $12 each for new ones, it seemed silly not to replace them with new. There are no performance enhancements going into this engine, just stock rebuild. Brett |
