How many hours labour to reseal a motor?
Car in question is an 85 911 turbo.

I think youre looking at 40 to 50 hrs. Heads in the shop and going to the bottom end to reseal the case and getting the turbo CIS all together..I think its a good quote.

Are you pullling and installing the engine yourself, or is that part of the time your looking for also?

Im not talking a rebuild just a reseal to stop the oil leaks.

You still have to take it apart and I generally split the case to stop the leaks because you want the leaks stopped and the center case line is 26 years old.
Its kind of rediculous to have you spend your money on a reseal and not do a valve job, you have to remove the heads from the cam carrier to reseal properly. Do you know if you have a standard crank? When I reseal, I have the crank in my hand and the agreement is if the mains are rough looking then we need to open the rods. The oil pressure is indictative of the bottom quality. I just consider it all part of doing the top end and the top end as part of the resealing. Bheck some of my post and you ll see what I do. Bruce |

that's pretty silly since you have to completely disassemble the thing anyhow. you might as well replace the wear items and do a proper rebuild while you're in there. the difference in cost is minimal.

The center case is not leaking its just a couple of minor leaks.

If the mileage is over 100K then you really should do a valve job while you are in there. I can understand leaving the shortblock together if everything is still tight from the pistons on down though.

There is 70000 on the bottom end and 58000 on a 3.4 topend.

Clarify 'reseal'.........
sledhed, Maybe you should clarify 'reseal'.........does this mean opening the crankcase halves? Or just cleaning and fixing the source/s of oil leak without opening the crankcase apart. Just getting engine off the car, a shop would typically charge you 10 - 14 hours (no work done except engine drop/install). I got this quote from a local Porsche shop (dealership) and the time seemed to be high but they based this from their standard rate book. If the leak sources are coming from either the pressure switch, thermostat seal, breather cover, or flywheel seal, 20 - 24 hours would be sufficient base from my personal experience and ability. Others could probably do this faster. How many hours did they quote you? Just my two cents. Tony |

realistic time 60 hrs. more important than anything is the best work takes time plenty of hidden problems will show up when you disassemble and clean and inspect everything the assembly is more critical and expeirence many people go fast and end up doing it again. go slow and if it does not feel right stop,look and inspect . good luck regards tom 38 years porsche factory technician.
