Advice on rebuild

Hi Guys,
I am a big time lurker (4 years or so!). I have a 1972 911T which I love. I am thinking over the next couple of years, once I save the $ that I will rebuild the engine as it had never been rebuilt.
I have read all the posts about upgrading a T, but I cant see an answer to the idea below. I have the books, and have read them all in preparation.

Can I get some advice about the following from you guru's please?!

As funds are tight (wife expecting a baby), I am thinking of just upgrading to a new set of 86mm high compression pistons and new cylinders. What sort of compression could I run using my T cam? Would this be advisable? and any ideas of any gain in this?

I would love to move to e cams or similar, but I had my pump rebuilt a couple of years ago and really dont want (and can not afford) to get it built to e specs, and tbh can not afford E cams just yet.

I was thinking about possible a 2 stage build over many years, as funds allow. Stage one would be the core with 86mm P&C's.

Stage 2 would be new cams and pump rebuild (but that would be a long way off!!). Maybe open up the heads a little, again E specs.

The car gets used about 2000 miles per year maximum, for fast road only.

Can't really help but I was looking at using 86mm pistons but using E cams and getting the pump redone, a common upgrade. I dont know about just using the p&c's just on there own but I am sure that someone on here will chime in soon to give you a definitive answer!

Hi, I have a 73 T that I recently rebuilt, here is what i did and the related costs. MFI pump worked over by Gus at Pacific Injection to "E" spec about $1,600., "E" cams $ 375. "T" Throttle bodies sent to Eurometrix, rebuilt to "E" spec. $1,300. Cylinders bored out to 85mm by EBS in Reno. J&E 85mm pistons ( can't remember costs ). Installed a front fender oil cooler from a salvaged 84 911. 6 new injectors, $660. Then all the general costs related to the rebuild.

Now my engine is making about 330hp...............just kidding, don't really know but it's running very well with lots of power, blast to drive, beat a Carrera GT yesterday......kidding again.

I will say nothing more than, do NOT use QSC cylinders.

you could get away using a T configured MFI pump with an E cam. With the increase in compression you will have a strong engine.

The danger is in not adjusting the fuel ratio correctly. Too lean and you will burn a piston because of the higher compression and T fuel delivery curve. If you go this route invest in an air fuel meter to help you dial in the T pump. You will loose some HP on the top end because of the T stacks but you can address that as a phase 2 when funds allow. Again, the Air Fuel meter will come in handy again. The LS1 AFM is only about $150 and will help a ton when ever cams are changed as the MFI is directly tuned to the cam.
