MFI pump seal replacement - anyone?

OK guys, I've posted some mfi pump leakage problems in another thread. This was a non-leaking pump before the engine rebuild. I might have found the cause - I've stored the pump in ATF for about 6 months. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/sad2.gif

So two q's:
- can someone confirm that storing the pump in ATF will effectively kill the seals
- has anyone replaced the seals in a mfi pump, is it fairly easy or are there lots of internal seals that need attention too?

I just did the injection pump shaft seal on a 1.6 1981 Rabbit Diesel this week and that fixed the leak.

I don't know if the seals are the same, but I'll have a look.

If you have problems locating a seal...try Chicago Rawhide (from McMaster -Carr)
They have seals for everything.
And...if you look at their catalog...you can find multiple lip seals that replace the single lip seals in our treasures.
The good thing about multiple lip seals...they have more than one sealing edge...and....those edges are in a different place than the old ones....so...if the shaft is worn...the new seal will do its job in a different place.

If you live in the Netherlands, just call Herr Sattleburger of Nurnberg Bosch. You can google the Bosch location in the downtown. Their website has a link to the MFI Pump rebuilds. This is the guy who bought all the original Porsche factory machines for the MFI. Gus use to get all his supplies from him, back in the day.
All the German MFI folks know this shop.

Thanks guys. Local rumour has it that Koller performance is not what it used to be...

Any thoughts on the effect of ATF?

I can supply you with a new seal, I have them in stock. ATF might damage the front seal but I have never tested that theory. If you can't find a seal near you I can mail you one. $18.00 for the seal plus mail cost to Netherlands.

Thanks Mark, I'll get back to you if I can't find it overhere!

What 'perfomance' problems you are referring to?

I'm told that Bosch has a oil designed for the pump storage. Call Koller, they have it...my 013 pump was rebuilt and then stored for 5 years with the Bosch oil/lubricant and was perfect when we started the motor recently.

Atelier14, I'm not here to put a shop in a bad position, all I know is a Porsche shop I contact frequently have had some trouble with rebuilt pumps.

I believe the Mercedes Benz crowd add ATF to their fuel to ensure adequate lubricity of the modern fuels for the pistons....take a look on some MBZ forums - real benefit or snake oil - you decide.

As to whether the ATF would cause rubber seal failure - I simply don't know.

The storage oil you are referring to is just the calibration fluid - you can get that at your local Bosch diesel pump service center, or equivalent from Shell S.9365

I was working on a cross-reference, but didn't find one. I'm curious to know if this seal is the same one used on some of the Bosch diesel injection pumps. Do you know?

I changed my pump shaft seal back in 2003 and don't remember it being challenging or tricky. All you need is a regular oil seal 17 x 34 x 4mm. My local seal and bearing shop here in Kuwait had it stock, so you should be able to find it locally in beautiful Nederland.

356RS 11-01-2011 08:05 AM

Yes, you can use the seal from most all the Mercedes MFI pumps. And as noted from the last post, you can order one from your local seal supplier.

elflamo 11-01-2011 03:43 PM

ok guys, thanks. I got the seal out and will check with my local Bosch dealer

Got your PM Dennis. I'll be glad to help.

Koller + Schwemmer

Look and watch the 2nd video - they rebuild a M300 SL MFI Pump.

hello

last year i sent my pump to Koller for a complete rebuild .
my engine has been rebuilt by a well known specialist in Belgium .
I'm very disappointed by the bosch guys. They have done a very bad job.:o
The pump was not correctly setup , the thermostat was clogged , shims was missing. I resent the pump with explanation , they charged me again ...and it didn't work correctly when engine is warm.
Finally we have done the job with an other specialist and ....everything is perfect for less money and better service . But it costs me all the work to setup the engine, dismount and reassemble the pump , again dismount the pump and resetup correctly ....time and money .
I'm not happy with that. Never again
