1969 fuel tank vent question

I am replacing a fuel tank in my 1969E and am confused about how and where the fuel vent tube works. My factory manual does not show or mention the fuel vent going into a charcoal system like 71-73 models. Is that something that came after '69? What does the vent do? the hose is about a foot long to nothing and gas just empties out unless I run a drain out of the trunk.

Well, as I remember, on my 69 E, the vent hose from the tank runs to a plastic box with another hose running down to an opening to outside behind the bumper. Really simple, the litle box is mounted above the tank, both inlet and outlet point down. Don't have photos, but hope this helps.

Here is a photo of my 68 fuel tank vent and how it's routed. I'm not sure if the '69 has the same vent path. From the fuel tank, the vent goes up through a hole in the sheet metal. It ties into a copper tube and then makes a loop next to the disk brake fluid reservoir (notice that the brake fluid reservoir overflow ties into the fuel tank vent via a small rubber tube), and then drops down to a larger hole in the sheet metal. At this point, the vent changes to rubber, and the rubber tubing is routed through two more holes in the sheet metal adjacent to the fuel tank and terminates at the bottom of the car. You can just make out the large flat rubber hose ending just behind the fuel sender plug at the bottom. Hopefully, the '69 routing is at least somewhat related to the '68 and this will give you an idea how yours should go.

Thanks for the replies! Both help. My primary concern was whether I am missing some obscure [removed in the past] filter system that was in the later models. Your replies answered that question. The '68 looks different in the trunk. I am going to look for a picture of a '69 for comparison. Thanks. I expect the '69 was similar but the tank placement is apparently different. But I can at least feel ok venting it under the car.
