This argument keeps going around.

If you run the engine for any length of time at zero load you will prevent the rings from seating correctly and end up with an engine that smokes.

There are many people that disagree with this principal but this is a very basic comment made by Shell many years ago:

When a cylinder is new the inner wall surface is not smooth as might be imagined. The objective of the break-in procedure is to rub off any high spots, both on the cylinder wall and the piston rings, so that the rings can create a tight gas seal for normal operation. This requires the piston ring to break through the oil film and allow a certain amount of metal-to-metal contact between the components. Once this matching has occurred the break-in is considered to be complete and very little contact will occur thereafter.

The anomaly is obviously that the lubricating oil is there to prevent metal-to-metal contact, but the process described requires that we rupture the oil film. There are two actions can critically impair this film rupture and therefore prevent adequate break-in; low power settings and the use of improper lubricating oils.

Did anyone find out what happened to this stand offering...?

Does anyone know of a stand available now or how best to build one AND what is best to put a load on the engine so it won’t get damaged...?

I built my own from 2x4 as its generally a rarely used item. I put it together with deck screws and disassembled when done. It was mounted on wheels so I could move around. I wanted to idle above 2Krpm for 20min to break in new cams and Rockers as recommended. I also wanted to set flow on MFI stacks before putting in 914 with difficult access and check for leaks. Worked great. Here are some pics. Getting ready to use again with latest engine build.

At a minimum, an engine-run stand will confirm whether there are any coolant and/or oil leaks or any other rebuild issues. Better to address them now rather than later. Once upon a time, a tech used up many hours diagnosing a no-start after reinstalling a rebuilt engine. Eventually discovered a crank sensor gap wasn't in spec.

Break-in doesn't have to be performed while on the test stand. Running it is just another step to confirm all is well until then. I vote yes if that's an option.

Simple Engine test stand
 
Here are some pics of mine, very simple and mobile.
I use a heavy duty steel cart and mount everything to the cart except for the fuel supply.

There was a thread a couple of years ago with some good pics and write up.
Do a search in the 911 forum - Looking for best way to test run 3.0 out of the car.

Been thru this road before, build one years ago, used it two times!, wasted money, unless you want it for show, there is not a better stand than the car itself!..just saying., William.
