964 3.6 rebuild

I am going to rebuild an 964 3.6L for my DE car (86 911) The motor has about 80,000 and ran when removed. I want to rebuild for alittle more power and mainly longerty. What are the do's and don'ts and musts. Also is there anything I should update on the car to make this bullet proof. My goal is do it once and have years of DE /autocross fun!!

964 3.6

Do you know if the 964 motor has the later style cylinders/heads?

Most cars probably do have the later style cylinders/heads, but I found my 1990 964 had not been updated, so getting the upgrade done was an essential part of getting my engine rebuilt.

You might want to consider upgrading your head studs to the late style 993 dilavars if you think they are worth the cost, personally I elected to go with Supertec head studs for my 964.

For your intended use I would give some consideration to replacing the restrictive exhaust system. My car still will need to pass emissions for another four years so I can really only replace the primary muffler with a bypass, but after that I will probably give some consideration to a free flowing exhaust, and might if I was in your position.

According to John Daugherty/CamGrinder on this board, the 964 cams can be reground to make a little more power, I considered this but opted to keep my engine stock, but for your use that might help.

Also, Steve Wong/911chips.com can work with you to get a little more out of the engine, particularly if you are going to make some exhaust and cam changes. Hope this helps a little and good luck.

ARP rod bolts, 993 studs, make sure it has the later-style cylinder/head interface. If not have the heads and barrels machined to take fire-rings. Rod bolts can be done w/o splitting the case. It all depends on whether you need/want to do the main bearings. How was the oil pressure?

You can do the cams if you want to shift the power band a little bit, get a chip, and make sure the exhaust is similar to the 993 HE style or proper headers. That's about it. It should last if the work is well done.

Of course you can go crazy, and port the heads, get larger valves, line-bore the case, and lighen the valve train to safely increase the rev limit but now you are starting to talk serious cash and the bang/$ ratio changes....
