Used GT3 crank - yay or nay?
 

Hello all,

I am looking at a used GT3 crank that the seller says has 40 hours (1 season) of racing on it.

I am willing to assume that dimensionally the journals are as original....but....without knowing for sure the history,

Should I run away as fast as I can? Buy it if it is one piece? Have it magnafluxed?

PS - For street use, 3.2, maybe with 98 pistons. Still planning and buying building blocks.

That would make for a mean 3.5. I would think a good crank specialist could inspect it and give you some confidence (either way).

Yes.... that's what I was thinking....but only AFTER it's mine:(.

So it's a matter of risk assesment - I know the consequences, but what are the odds?

I am tending to think that if it shows no signs of scoring or wear then it's most likely not cracked, fatigued, or bent, and that it would be worth buying, checking, and using.

Anyone know the cost of magnafluxing a crank?

New GT3 cranks are available from Supertec for $ 1,880 so why risk a used crank?

Remember that most GT3 cranks spend a great deal of time under full throttle situations and at over 9000 RPM. I think under those conditions a crank only has a limited life.
