Cams...How to determine what I have.
I had a 2.7 built with a 2.4 case in 1978...
The engine is out of a car but I can run it. Originally we put Solex cams in the engine but later we changed the cams and I don't remember what we put in there. I cannot find the invoice for the second set of installed cams. And my question is: if I use a dial indicator to measure the lift of the cams and put a degree wheel on the crank to measure the duration...correct so far?...and write the specs down would someone be able to tell me what cams I have? Thanks. |
Yes that will work.
This should help you identify the cam http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324293503.jpg |
Fantastic chart Tom!
I printed it. Thank you very much! Best Augustus |

Tom,
I just came across this...thanks for posting the chart! Are the part #'s stamped on the end of the camshaft opposite of the cam sprockets or would one have to measure the cam lobes to determine what camshaft it is? |
In some, but not all cases, the P/N is stamped on the nose of the cam.
The casting P/N is cast into the body of the cam and is usually the same as the first 9 digits ion the part number. This allows you to narrow down the possibilities in an unknown cam. You can also measure the lobes with a hand held caliper to further narrow things down. However, in some cases, it is necessary to put the cams in a cam doctor to know exactly what you have. Here is how I did it... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/530913-diy-cam-doctor.html |
