camshaft help
i am putting together my first engine and i am trying to follow waynes book. on camshaft setting i have set z1 with dot on left camshaft up.
valve clearance set .1 mm rotated crank 360 set up my dial indicator as outlined in book. ( 72 911 T motor needs 2.6mm) roated camshaft without pin in till dial indicated valve seat moved down 2.6 mm into cyl. i put pin in and torqued nut. i have vid if somebody could review it right side i set z1 and the camshaft dot up. ( i think this should have been done when i set the left side up) i rotated 360 after setting valve clearance put dial on and removed pin turned camshaft almost 1/2 a revolution and noted lift coming around z1 stayed and when i saw change in dial showing valve moved down 2.6 mm i put pin back in it feels like i did it wrong and worried about direction of rotation thanks Last edited by saxe91; 12-16-2011 at 01:20 PM.. |

Over thinking this procedure is easy. Let's make it simple:
Find Z-1 on crank pulley and line it up with the case seam under the fan: Rotate both cams until the dots face straight up. Install the pins in both cam gears. (At this point the cams are in rough time and the engine will run) Install the dial indicator on #1 intake valve spring retainer. Turn crank CW 360 until Z-1 is up again. At this point the #1 intake valve should be opening by the amount specified. Adjust the cam (not the crank) until the desired opening is attained. Move dial indicator to #4. Turn crank 360 degrees again to get Z-1 straight up. Check #4 and adjust the same as #1. Done..

Your method will work if you got the 2 cams 360 out from each other. If the number 1 and 4 intake valves are opening at the same time, then you've got it wrong and need to turn one of the cams 180 degrees. Hint, both cams should rotate the same direction and the dots should be in the same position for both cams.

a little bit more clarity on camshaft set
thanks for replies.
currently my camshaft dots are not arranged on the same side (one is up the other is down). so I got it wrong. Maybe I rotated the right camshaft back wards. So once it is set up correctly both camshafts dots will be pointed in same direction and 1 intake would begin to open at z1 and then after a 360 rotation of the crank the number 4 intake would open. ok so i have the intake valves opening it appears at the correct time and orientation. just wanted to double check my set. I have measured the distance the valve seat will travel from close to z1 open and it is 3.7mm on both 1 and 4. this is a 2.4 t motor 1972 mfi. waynes book says the travel is 2.4 to 2.8mm that i am looking for from initial set up. So does this measurement of 3.7 after camshaft set up mean i have accomplished the procedure? thanks

No. If the spec is 2.4 - 2.8, that's were it needs to be. At 3.7 your cam is advanced and the valve may hit the piston.

yes, I think it might be a little advanced. I am going to double check double check but when I do cylinder to valve clearance I am experiencing some contact below the 1.5mm for intake and 2mm for exhaust. thanks
