Question 964 lower cam cover seals

Hi all,
I am very experienced with the earlier flat gasket 911 cam covers, but I am about to work with the later 964 covers. I am wondering about the use of any compounds, rtv, or other material being applied to the seals? Are they best installed dry, light oil on them, or with a sealant? Thanks for the help.
Peter

When I first bought my 964, me and my mech removed the covers to set the valve gaps; just refitted using the correct gasket, dry, and no leakage probs at all. We certainly didn't use any RTV.

Engine now pulled for project work. As part of the top-end gasket kit I've got the flat gaskets, but also ordered the silicon re-usable ones from Pelican, as I reckon we'll be taking the covers off for inspection, etc, quite a few time. Then resetting gaps after some mileage has been done.

Spenny_b,
Hi and thanks for the reply. I am a bit confused though! I really didn't expect to use rtv, but perhaps light oil. You said you put them together dry and all was good. Now you are getting ready to use flat gaskets (albeit silicon) in your rebuild? Why would you use flats on a 964 with the "O ring" style covers? I think I am missing something.
Thank you,
Peter

Hi Peter, cheers for the message - just sent you one back, both talking about the same thing, but mine's a Turbo, which used a more rigid version of the 930 covers, which I suspect is the difference to the one's your using on the M064 family engine.

Cheers
S

My local Porsche mechanic said to use; Curil K2 and a lot of it. I personally have no experience with using it.
