Advice needed: 2.4 cam removal and tensioners
I am use to the 930 oil fed tensioners where you can put a small allen key in once the shaft is all the way down and it will hold in the down position during removal and insertion.
On these I don't see anyway to do this.... Can you help me with the following? This is a 1972 2.4 liter. 1) Removal of chain tensioner... how to push shaft back in as well... or just proper removal technique will also help with that I'm guessing. 2) Removal of cams (can I slightly loosen all rocker arms and remove cam since I am only doing minor valve job (seals and guides) rather than remove all rocker arms and shafts..? The motor only has 2,500 kilometers on it and does not leak at all... so trying to save some unneeded work. To get the cams out, remove the chain drives and gears, all the rockers and the cam will come out. Dont mix the thrust washers from the right and left side. They need to go back correctly.
Those tensioners wont reset as the oil fed ones do. when you put them back in, a long heavy screwdriver to press the pin in under the idler and a small hammer to tap the tensioner home. Get a set of guards for them, cheap insurance. Bruce |
Bruce, so your saying all rocker arms and shafts need to come out... not just loosened up to allow cam to pass by them? I was told this would also work. Any clarification would be helpful.

The rockers wont rock outside the bearings thats why they have to be removed.

Porsche has a "special" tool for this called P214. It's a wide U bracket that you place on the tensioner to hold it in a compressed position.

And take a good look at your chain idler arms and the housing pivot shafts when you get the cams out. Those old style arms like you have, have a tendency to want to seize up.

just to clarify, if you loosen the rocker arms (away from the cams... like when doing an adjustment) so they are loose (not on their own shaft) ... the cam won't come out? This being said I will have to remove all rocker arm shafts and remove the rocker arm completely from the cam tower to remove the actual cam? Was trying to avoid this since the motor is new.. The cam will not pull out past the bearings even with loose rockers.

Thx Bruce. All rockers are out and just waiting to get socket to properly remove chain cams and also the chain tensioners.
What is the best way to remove tensioner? Just loosen bolts and slide off or should I be doing something to compress before I remove? Bryan |
You ll compress it with the big screwdriver when you put it back in.

Just pull the tensioners out.
