short stroke 3.2

i have a 3.0 liter motor that i am considering making a short stroke 3.2. i have some 3.2 cylinders that i will get rebored and plated. also have some 3.2 heads that are reconditioned with racing springs and twin plugged. i plan on running pro 46's with electromotive crank fire twin plug. going to use a mod s cam or a dougerty 60. thinking about getting some j and e pistons with 11.5 compression form LN. concerned about how all this will fit. will the heads need to be modified to match the 98 mm pistons. what else should i worry about?

You need to angle cut 3.2 heads to match 98mm cylinders. What has been told many times here by experts also for me, take care that you have good oiling e.g. 930 oil pump and maybe upgraded piston squirters.

You may want to talk to Lindy911. He completed a build very much like the one you are talking about and may have some good advice. My 3.2SS is a whole different animal.

targa time, what is your torque and hp numbers?

Henry Schmidt 02-24-2012 05:41 PM

Here is the last 3.2 SS we built and it is very similar to your build. As seen in Excellence Magazine last year.
Give me a call and I'll walk you through it.

Dougallen

I have no idea. Plan to have a dyno done this summer. I have been told by a reputable Porsche mechanic that his butt dyno says 225 rwhp.

I have an 83 sc, 98 mm 10.2:1 Mahle P&C, 120/104 camshafts, twin plugged, carrera intake, Tec3r, ssi. It makes 223 rwhp, 202 torque on the dyno. Nowhere as nice looking as the engine built by Mr Schmidt

Being boy83 is getting 223 than I am less than that. I guess that my mechanic needs to have his butt dyno re-calibrated! Or maybe the weight loss program just makes it feel that way.

Boy83 is making 223 with a common plenum Carrera intake. If he had your PMO 46's 240 would be my guess. Both engines are giving up peak HP using SSI; too small but not many other options if you want / need heat.

I've heard good things about mod S cams in this application. I used GE 60 because I found a set I could afford. They seem to work pretty well.

I like the idea of a twin-plug distributor with twin MSD boxes driving individual coils. The voltage to the plugs is a lot more with two boxes than one although it works OK with one. At high RPM the voltage becomes more of a factor, the hotter the better.

We've been working on the tuning of my 3.0 (not 3.2 SS) and without muffler get about 238 rwhp through a stock 915. The engine is set-up with the following:
Stock SC crank with Supertec Power pulley
Re-sized and bushed SC rods / Raceware bolts and nuts
JE 10.5:1 custom light weight pistons with Poly-dyne skirts
Twin plug '78 SC heads with race springs and titanium retainers
Stock Mahle 95mm cylinders w/ Supertec studs
GE 60 cams
Weber 46 mm carbs
Aaron Burnham twin-plug SC distributor w/ NGK 6EKU8 "R" plugs
Twin MSD 6AL CDI with twin coils
'78 SC fan
Horsepower Engineering headers (looking at Buckley Racing)

Other than oil leaks, this was an easy build and tune. With a few more hours of tune time It'll be real close.

For reference, 2010 Grand Sport Vette pulled me from a stop light, when i got second he stopped pulling, when I got third I caught him and passed. He let me go when I got forth...
Oh, my car weighs 2200 lbs. No air or heat, stripped of anything not essential to making the car move.

Is this a straightforward job for a good machinist who has never done it before or would you recommend sending the heads to a specialist?

I'm also considering what pistons/compression ratios work well with what camshafts. Do you know of any good thread of other resource to get to know more about that?

Thanks!
