You and me both :D

I removed the headlights last week and discovered some rust, cracked headlight-to-fender seals and toasted plug sockets. I've sanded out the rust and put two coats of rustoleum primer on the affected area - should be ready to paint today. New seals and plug sockets are en route. Hopefully I should have these puppies plugged in next week!! ;)

Where did you find those headlights? any links?

Update

Things are starting to get interesting now. The engine is dismantled, and much of the machining is complete. Just waiting on the crankshaft to be magnafluxed and micropolished, and the bottom end should be reassembled next week. Below are some pics of the case and heads after a much needed cleaning - sorry for the pic size.

Notice that the heads have been machined to accept the 993 knock bridges. We're going to install them with knock sensors but not actually use them yet. They'll be in place for when I move from Motronic to an aftermarket EFI that supports twin knock plugs. For now, in the short term we'll run stock Motronic with a J&S Safeguard running a single knock sensor on the throttle plate.

Update

Making more progress! The engine should be buttoned up by the end of this week. We haven't finalized the compression ratio yet, but I'm hoping to be in the 10.2-10.4:1 range. Here are some pics of the progress:

Thanks Cap'n!

Well, one more step is complete. The car is on its way back up to the engine builder and should be put back together in the coming weeks. I've enjoyed knocking out a dozen or so projects on the car, but I'm just ready to drive this thing!

Another update

The engine is back together and should be in the car mid next week. Then some fine tuning with the new electronics and road testing. Hopefully I'll have the car in my hands within 2 weeks!!

Engine looks great- look forward to hearing how it runs.

Almost there...

Lots of little setbacks, but we're almost there. I've read so many other people's build threads and the delays they encounter... Ten months ago, I would have told you I'd have my car by the end of May. I didn't think the rules applied to me...

Well, the engine is back in and running smoothly. My engine builder had to iron the wrinkles out of a lot of little enhancements I attempted on the car. Everything seems to be coming together well. I'm not sure how common this is among engine builders, but Mark actually does significant road testing on all his engines - separate from dyno tuning. He put 200 miles on the engine so he was confident the rings seated correctly. He then changes the oil, adjusts the valves and re-torques the cylinder heads before delivery. This is a nice QA measure IMHO.

Plan is to pick the car up tomorrow or Thursday... *fingers crossed*

Congratulations on the completion of your rebuild. Good luck and have fun...

update?
final specs?

crashmy911 08-31-2013 06:20 PM

How'd you make out?

crashmy911 08-31-2013 06:21 PM

Your tech 3. R system went to dyno last week.

Ok, a really, really old thread, but I would love to hear from the OP as to how the engine has been in the past 7 years. How many miles, how has it performed and behaved, any issues? What about fuel economy?

Anything you'd do different with the benefit of hindsight? I am getting ready for my 3.4 build using many of the same parts as you....love to hear the experience.

Thanks!

Dennis
