Does this cam need reconditioning?

Inspecting my cams I found small pitting on the lobes. Do they need to be recondition?

Can of worms...Yes and NO
Why is it apart ...Must be more to it then a expedition?
Anyway..its apart....I do not know what cams you have..is it time for a Upgrade?
If not put it all back where you found it .

Yes time for new. If you see pits its on the way out.

Afterburn,

Initially the engine needed valve guides. So I decided to go down the slippery slope. Had two Porsche mechs respond, one said yes the other said no. So which one is it?

Like said..if you jump, go deep...and there are ways to save bucks .You can do the guides your self.....If you are a little bit familiar with reading and hands on stuff.....But i have to say some times I loose tract of the difficulties cause I have been doing things for too long.
New Guides mean a complete valve job.
Then you might as well go new cams at that point - would be silly wasting polish on the old ones.
Dont try to cut courners,,,sane $$$$ is ok
Remember your exhaust valves live in HELL !

A friends SC had pits on the lobes when it was new. They are still there at 76,000 miles...

afterburn 549 02-29-2012 05:51 AM

I dont think a couple pits are a problem....It comes dwn to "Once you start" you have to do a lot...Always
New cam equals polish feet too... and I did mine myself 30000 miles ago...so i guess it worked despite the consensus of the Borg here.
I would try a 964 cam next round

If your gonna sell it when you're done then put those cames back in with a valve job and move on. If you're gonna keep it then go big or go home!

Beware, its futile to resist being assimilated into the greater conscious of the Borg:)

Those pit are nothing - I would not be concerned in the least to use the cam "as-is"!

El_Mecanico 03-01-2012 02:53 PM

THX Ronnie for your answer...I'll get with.
