How to Remove Piston Pin Snap Ring on a 3.6
What is the easiest way to remove one of the snap rings that hold the piston pins in place on a 3.6 motor. I have tried using a small screwdriver to get under the end tab of the clip, but it doesn't seem to work. So far this is the toughest fastener I've encountered on this motor!! There has to be a trick to getting them out.

I use a dental pic to remove these.
Use the pic in one hand to get behind the snap ring. Then pry the clip out while guiding the clip with a finger on your other hand to keep it from escaping. |
Got it! Thought I owned one of every tool made, but did not have any dental picks in my collection. A quick trip to Sears, and the first snap ring came out with about a 5 minute learning curve on my part.
Seeing how much force was required to remove them, the bigger issue is going to be re-inserting them when I am all done. Any ideas? |
A pin insertion tool is worth it's weight in cold. I'm stubborn and haven't bought one. I wrap duct tape around my thumb so it doesn't hurt so much when you push it in, lol. Thing is, all you have to do is lose one when it goes SPROING! tring to get it in, then wait a week for it to arrive in your order, then the tool makes more sense.
Be SURE when you go to replace them that you put something in the cylinder bores in the case so if/when it does shoot out of there, that it doesn't go inside your newly assembled case. |

Heres a handy way to install em. And if you think those are awkward don't even think about a 996 install-then again don't think about them at all. |
Earossi,
When I got this tool it was a happy day, I showed it to a pro engine builder friend who promptly ordered a set. I still like the plastic wrap to keep a flying clip from flying where you do not want it. Stomski Racing Circlip Injector - YouTube Stomski Racing Circlip Injector |
That Stomski tool is neat and simple.
Here's how I do it with a tool I made from an old 4mm allen key ... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332167160.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332167197.jpg |
those thick rings are near impossible to get in with your fingers, unlike the earlier ones. i made a tool out of a 911 cigarette lighter outer shell and a deep socket that fit well inside.

Bumping an ancient (yet timeless) threat. I have a few sets of nice quality picks but fear I am damaging the half round recess as I pry. Can anyone describe the technique they used?
The headstuds are really in the way... They need to come out on my car and suppose I could remove them first but wanted the pistons out of the way so I can use heat on the case without worrying about hitting the pistons. |
I don’t install the bottom studs until I have all snap rings and cylinders in place.

That is a good idea especially since I am using supertec studs which appear to be much easier to install.
