Connecting rod torque method
 

Hey everyone, I'm about to torque my connecting rods. I'm using the Bentley repair manual and it states to torque the rod bolts to 14 ft lbs and then turn an extra 90 degrees. Is that a good torquing method? I'm going to be using OEM rod bolts, Im thinking it should be fine for a stock rebuild. What are your thoughts?

Lube the bolts so they torque smoothly. I run the 14 # and let them set then do the 14# again and then swing the 90 degrees.

If they are oem and 9mm, they must be new. You should not re-use 9mm oem rod bolts since they are designed so that the tightening toque exceeds the tensile strength and therefore permanently elongate. The 3.2 and newer engines have the 9mm rod bolts. The 3.0 and older use 10mm if I recall.

For this reason a lot of folks upgrade to ARP or similar rod bolts, but this also requires that you re-bore the rods to make sure they are "perfectly" round with the new bolts.
