looking for picture of twin plug distributor firing order

I am in need of a true twin plug distributor (one cap) firing order diagram to verify my wire placement.

Thanks,
Bryan

First of all, Happy Easter. I have a couple questions.

On the billet portion of the distributor (pictured below) I need clarification as to what is TDC for this distributor.

Also, as Henry has so nicely provided above the caps are labeled with the appropriate markings. When you look at 1A you will see 1B about 1/3 the way around the cap. On my cap, you will see 1A and 1B right next to each other.

If I am using the rotor below isn't the appropriate orientation of plug wires going to the be for the caps pictured above and not my version (which may be a jaguar....?). Can someone confirm which cap I have and help with the questions above?

Lastly, my cap also cracked by the screw (someone over tightened... I won't say who but it was me) so I am need of another one. Where to buy, how much and is the Jag a good option?

Thanks,
Bryan

I am unfamiliar with a twin plug distributor but here are a few ideas. There must be a way to fire both plugs at the same time. There should be a second rotor or the rotor should have 2 "firing ends". These rotor ends should point at the two wires for the same cylinder. Henry's diagram would indicate that these two firing ends are almost 180 degrees apart. From your picture I don't see a second firing end on your rotor, nor do I see a second rotor. You need to figure out where the second firing end is and make sure it points to the other plug wire for the same cylinder that the first firing end is pointed at.

Hope this helps.

cap info

Here is what we use to ID the wiring for both rotations

The numbers on the cap are there to reference firing order on a 12 cylinder Jaguar. Use those numbers for identifying location only.

The rotor was designed and manufactured by Aaron Burnham @ Rennwerks to convert the jaguar cap to fit the Porsche twin plug application.

The Jag cap is the only cap that fits the Rennwerks rotor. The Marelli cap as used by Porsche was poorly designed to use twin carbon contacts that historical created problems due to excess carbon dust.

Henry, a couple questions

1) How do I know where #1 is on this dist so I can identify where it needs to be turned to? Do I need to talk with Rennwerks for this information?
2) Are they the maker of my twin plug billet distributor as well as the supplier for my cap?
3) When you say use the markings above for reference only... what do you mean? If my rotor has two firing ends (which it does) about 120 degrees apart how could I have 1A and 1B wires right next to each other (if I used the markings on my the cap) they wouldn't fire in order... correct? I guess I could use that as a diagram for referencing where the wires go as well as Mikes from JB Racing. I just need to figure out #1 location.
4) What are the pictures of your cap above for, meaning are they original Porsche style? Or are they the Jaguar type?
5) If on my cap the 1A and 1B are right next to each other what type or brand of cap do I have?

Appreciate the help. I need to verify what mark indicates #1 in this dist before I can do anything besides purchase another cap in the meantime. I will call rennwerks.

Regards,
Bryan

I called Rennwerks in Campbell, CA and the rotor is not from them. He said it is called a Rennwerks rotor but not made by them. Is the email address or Rennwerks above that Henry mentioned a different person/company?

Thx,
Bryan

Yes, talk to Arron Burnham

lindy 911 04-09-2012 09:13 AM

Bryan,

Put the cap on the dizzy, identify #1 upper pin, then mark the dizzy with a black felt tip pen. Pull the cap, install the dizzy in the case with the rotor upper contact pointing at the mark you made with the felt tip pen. Done.

Do I need to talk with Rennwerks for this information?

The distributor was fabricated in my shop when Aaron worked for Supertec. The caps are available through many sources as well as Supertec
3) When you say use the markings above for reference only... what do you mean?
What I meant was that the markings on the cap are for labeling only.

They dist. cap with white numbers is the firing order.
I guess I could use that as a diagram for referencing where the wires go as well as Mikes from JB Racing. I just need to figure out #1 location.
You can pick any post as #1
4) What are the pictures of your cap above for, meaning are they original Porsche style? Or are they the Jaguar type?
They are Jag caps
5) If on my cap the 1A and 1B are right next to each other what type or brand of cap do I have?
You need to grasp the concept that the cap is not marked for use on a Porsche engine.

The distributor was installed in your car by me. The distributor, cap and rotor are definitely Aaron's product.
The Rennwerks in Cambell is a BMW tuner.
Aaron is in Camarillo

Thanks Henry,

The firing order from your cap and the one on Patrick motorsports is different so should I should use I'm guessing yours to ensure the correct orientation?

Also, if any plug can be #1 do I even need to clock my distributor 180 or just look at rotor and then start the process?

Lastly, is orientation of the Coil A & B terminals need to match what the cap looks like when I install the cap when I'm at #1?

Sorry for all the questions, I do now know not to use the markings on the cap... sorry i wasn't clear before.

Cheers,
Bryan

Guys, she runs awesome!!!! I was 180 out on the dist and now she runs great. I do have one last question... I need to set the timing now with a light. It is a 2.4 twin plug 911S motor with weber 40's on pump gas and fairly high compression (not sure on exact compression numbers here)

1) What should I set my timing at with the light? Is there a range where it should be based on my driveability?
2) What RPM does the motor need to be at to set the timing?
3) Do I clip the light onto spark plug wire for #1 or a coil wire?

Thanks in advance,
Bryan

lindy 911 05-02-2012 06:46 AM

Since Henry is the one who originally came up with this combination, he would have the best answer to your timing question; send him a PM.

Put the timing light pick-up lead on #1 plug wire.

Timing will be in the 26-28 degrees BTDC range and it's best to get that at around 5,000 rpm to make sure all the advance in the distributor is in.

x98boardwell 05-04-2012 04:49 PM

All done.. she is a screamer. Talked with Henry and Aaron and rennwerks.

Thanks for all the help!!!

lindy 911 05-07-2012 05:19 AM

So does it smoke anymore? Did you stick with the carbs?

x98boardwell 05-07-2012 06:51 AM

No smoke except some fuel... I think I am running too rich. She drives like a bat out of hell. Hopefully, will be able to post a video or two in the coming weeks.

Thanks for all the help.
Bryan
