1977 3.0 motor trans. rebuild

I have a 1977 careers targa 3.0. Motor needs complete rebuild and want upgrades/modifications for oiling ,timing chain, head studs etc. And d SSI exhaust. Was given estimate for$30,000. Seems like ripoff. Opinions please. Also price for transmission rebuild

Carrera Targa 3.0. Sorry

It's my feeling that a vendor has the right to charge whatever they deem appropriate but that number seems high.
I would call Henry @ Supertec. Those types of engines are what they do.

Thanks for the reply. I thought was out of line and now they want $2,500 for checking it out. WTF. There not installing new pistons or cylinders but are quoting all the upgrades and SSI exhaust.

I called (3) other shops and they all tell me around $18,000 including rebuilding feul reg. and painting all pans, parts as original so all I have to do is bolt it in, plug it in, add oil and fire up.

The other (3) shops all came in within $1,000-$1,200 of each other so seems like the first guy trying to really stick it to me. In addition the first guy I talked to tells me labor hours is around 115 hours. Everyone else about 60 hours.

I guess it was my fault for not asking what the cost of checking things out was going to be but Holly Crap Batman!! But I didn't think it was going to be that far out of line.

$30k and no new P&Cs. wow! even $18K sounds high, especially if they don't do the install and finish up the job. keep looking.

john1961 04-27-2012 06:06 AM

Just talked to another shop. Told me $15-$18,000. Doing ALL performance. I feel very comfortable with that. pAINTING PARTS ETC.

john1961 04-27-2012 06:09 AM

Sorry for spelling error. Doing all performance upgrades and painting pans, fan housing etc.

john walker's workshop 04-27-2012 01:27 PM

what are you going to get exactly, for $15-18K? new P&Cs, new oil pump, new intermediate shaft, new rockers and shafts, chains, sprockets, etc? hopefully.

As you can see NO New Cylinders or Pistons. Please, opinions that I can trust are welcome.

john1961 04-27-2012 04:28 PM

Oh by the way. This exact estimate was $28,000. I took the motor and trans. out as a unit and gave to the shop to evaluate. I since have spoke to a few other shops and they are telling me numbers around $18,000. I don't who to trust. I'm on East Coast-PA

john walker's workshop 04-28-2012 09:14 AM

just did a quick pricing for you. sorry about the sideways pic. seems $18K is in the ball park, w/P&Cs, which may vary a bit in price, depending on who sells them.

john1961 04-28-2012 09:47 AM

Didn't see fuel pressure reg etc rebuild, stripping painting tins, turbo valve cover upgrade, oil modification upgrade etc. Is the the $1,000 misc?
I will call you

john walker's workshop 04-28-2012 05:40 PM

painting tin is in the labor part. valve covers in the misc crap part. you may not even need the rebuilt WUR and fuel distributor. you could replace even more if necessary, like rocker shafts (which you would not polish), oil pump, complete intermediate shaft, if they don't pass inspection after disassembly.

john1961 04-29-2012 05:32 AM

Can we be safe to say that even if we were replacing oil pump, intermediate shaft and rocker shafts we would be no higher than $20,000?
