Rebuild Question - 2.0 Finishing Touches
Hi All,
A few quick questions as I finish my 1969 2.0L T engine refresh: - Valve Cover Finish: Had my covers blasted and surfaced. Turned out great. Plan to install in vehicle as-is. Is this advisable? Some people have advised me to paint them in "dull aluminum" high-temp engine paint or catalyzed urethane clearcoat to prevent against oil/fuel stains. - Intake manifolds: Same as above but these are already oxidizing a bit. Will dull aluminum high-temp engine paint suffice? Or will the paint be ruined by the likely presence of fuel from time-to-time? - Timing Chain cover finish: Same as above but not surfaced. I plan to install as blasted. OK? - Oil tank: I had it hot-tanked and am now stripping it. In addition to removing the paint I'm also grinding off the copper-like finish. Will I need to have this re-applied or can I simply rattle-can the tank with high-temp, semi-gloss black? - Oil tank #2: The interior surface of the tank has a fair amount of surface rust. Any one know if an Eastwood style motorcycle gas tank kit (Metal Wash, Fast Etch Rust Remover and Gas Tank Sealer) would work to treat this? It might be best to leave out the tank sealer - for instance - as hot engine oil might just dissolve that chemical.) Any assistance appreciated! Best, Kevin |

Not sure about the 2nd oil tank (what 2nd tank? only one per car.). For the valve covers I would paint black or leave as raw, black helps heat dispersal. For the rest, you could just leave as is. Oil tank should be black I believe.
For any paint I would recommend VHT. Can be used on exhaust pipes even and is very resistant to just about everything.

Black paint is not all alike.
Heat conductive paint will help in shedding unwanted heat. Harley Davidson used to make some...for cylinders...was very watery...had to put on several coats to cover (and bake in between coats). If you paint with normal stuff...you lock in the heat and not help the dissapation...possibly killing your engine. Header paint (VHT) locks in heat as far as I know....go to a paint supplier and ask for their expertise. Bob

I don't paint the various casings. I get them chromated after glass beading. Same with the fan and housing. You need a good paint on the oil tank to stop it corroding if you take off the copper coating to protect from road filth. Don't worry too much about heat dissipation, there is very little in that confined space anyway. I would be interested to know where you have found a second oil tank!
