Prepping Nikisil Cylinders

There has been a lot written on how to prep used Nikisil cylinders for new piston rings using hot soapy water and Scotchbrite.

I've just done this but cannot say that I can see any evidence that I have removed any cylinder glazing. I can clearly see the original hone marks. So, what should I be looking for?

I first soaked each cylinder in carb cleaner for 30 minutes. Then, using red Scotchbrite, I followed the instructions to scrub the cylinders with hot soapy water using Scotchbrite.

And, can anyone give guidance on how many minutes it should take to remove the glaze? I spent about 10 minutes per cylinder with the Scotchbrite technique.

Ernie,

Sounds like you've done the job,...

You WILL see the original hone marks; all you are doing is removing carbonized oil left on the surface of the bores and thats the proper procedure to accomplish this.
