Head Stud Cement
We have just had to remove a few broken studs from an SC case and trying to remove them was quite a trick and we ended up having to resort to using an Oxy-Acetylene torch and removing them while they were hot.
Now it is all cleaned up and waiting to rebuild I am concerend that we use the correct grade of threadlocker. I have read a few threads as some say 'Loctite 'Red' , some say 'Green' and some say 'Blue', There are many grades of 'Red' both medium and high strength and blue seems generally to be low strength. Opinion seems dividied about whether to try to fit them permanently Loctite 608 is medium strength and 680 is high strength. Loctite 271 seems a common Red Loctite and is High Strength Loctite 242 is a Blue Loctite and is medium strength. All of them require heating to around 500 degF to disassemble. The only note I can find the the workshop manual suggests heating with a butane type torch to loosen the 'Head Stud Cement'. Is there any definitive Loctite that works well and will allow studs to be replaced? without too much pain. Also what are the thoughts about torqueing up the heads before the 'Head Stud Cement has set? |

Use #271 for the head studs and make sure its completely cured before torquing the heads.

Loctite's numbering system can throw you off because the various numbers are for fastener size. Here's a handy list courtesy of McMaster-Carr for red Loctite threadlockers
