Engine machining recommendations/advice
 

I recently bought a 1971 Porsche 911T that I am planning to restore. It appears the PO started the process of rebuilding the engine and then got distracted and moved on to another project.

The engine is completely disassembled and I am trying to decide what machine work I should have done.

The odometer on the car says 73k and given the condition of the car that would seem accurate.

My plan is to restore the car to original using all original parts, carbs, etc. I probably won't do any hot rodding.

Given that, what would be the best approach to getting the engine components machined?

I know that I could spend thousands on just the machine shop but want to find the right balance of getting the engine in optimal condition without going overboard.

Fortunately, the heads have been completely redone at Ollies and look like new.

I am trying to decide what else I should have done before I begin the reassembly. Would it make sense to have the case halves bored back to standard, have the bore mains aligned, have the cylinder decks resurfaced, etc?

I will call Ollies and get their advice as well but was hoping for some input from the forum folks.

Is there sort of minimum or required machining items and then maybe a "nice to have" list and then a "restore to like new" list of items?

I have done some searching but most folks say they had machining done but don't necessarily get into exactly what they did.

Walt at competition engineering is great. He is in lake Isabella just east of Bakersfield. Also a good place to start. He has a lot of years under his belt and knows a lot about these motors. When Wayne wrote his "how to rebuild you 911 motor" book all the pictures were from Walt's shop.
