Best Mounting Location for single Knock Sensor on pre-89 engine?

Guys,

I'm planning to run a J&S Safeguard with stock Motronic engine management on my 3.2 Carrera. At some point down the road, I'll probably run an aftermarket EFI that can handle two knock sensors and attach them to the heads via some 993 cylinder bridges. But for the time being, I'm going to run a single knock sensor.

For those of you that have installed a single knock sensor on a pre-89 engine, can you recommend the most ideal location? I'm going through a complete rebuild, so I'm OK to machine the case if need be.

Thanks!

Good idea. Might be good to emulate the location of the factory knock sensor. If needed, you can weld a boss onto the appropriate location (cyl. head) to accept a sensor.

I just put a J&S on to my Kremer 3.2. I installed it on the throttle plate on the top of the engine, where the rod from under the car comes up and connects to a bellcrank that actually opens the throttle. I will see if I have a picture of the installation somewhere.

There are several threaded holes in that plate and I just used one with the appropriate fastener without a washer and it has performed flawlessly.

My J&S is quite active and obviously working well, so the knock sensor is doing its thing. I took me a while and a bit of John's most excellent customer support to set up the vacuum advance correctly, but once that was past all has been well.

I also had North Hollywood Speedometer do a guage with the display built in....

I had mine on the engine breather cover and it worked fine.

Guys - Thanks for all the great responses. Could one of you that have mounted the knock sensor on the throttle plate post a picture?

I remember Chris did for some of our pelican member fellow a conversion in the cylinder heads(using the bridge on each side), you should find pictures in the pelican technical forum, probabily on the turbo forum

good luck!
