What is this little round spring washer for

When i took the nose bearing (I think thats what it is called), i noticed this little "washer" made out of a spring like material inside, i took it out to get a picture, as I am curious as to what it is for.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1337357448.jpg

Its the little thing below the nose bearing in the picture

It goes in/on the nose bearing seal, inside the back side of the seal around the lip to help hold the seal lip against the crank. The new seal will have one, you need to a little careful when installing the seal that it doesn't come off.

thanks i'll check that the new seal has it properly in place.

Agreed 100%. That's why you'll occasionally hear people say you should pack the inside of the seal with grease. I recall the factory manual saying something like Kluber or whatever? The grease type doesn't really matter all that much.

I mentioned the name because its that brand Porsche mentions in the manual that makes the packing idea stick in my mind. The reason to pack with grease (actually 3 or 4 small blobs is plenty) is to make sure the spring stays on the seal lip when you press/tap the seal in place.

Fortunately the spring stayed in place when installed the seal

It is called a garter spring.

If your seal is leaking a bit around the crank side, you can shorten this spring a little easily enough (the ends screw together) to tighten it. A band-aid, to be sure, but good to have up your sleeve.
