Upgrading my 3.6 to 3.8 liter

Greetings,
As I approach rebuilding the top end of my 993 I want to ask this esteem forum for some advice.

In addition to changing out the exhaust system, what can I do to increase power without breaking the bank or negatively affecting the 3.6 liter stock engine using 3.8 liter parts?

I assume I can increase horse power by quite a bit, but I'm not sure by how much. Is this a wise move?

I suppose I can always consider selling this car replacing it with a 996 Turbo as the 996 prices for used cars is cheap. (I know it's water cooled and not as cool locking as the 993)

Thanks in advance.
James

James,

Exhaust changes on a 993 yield VERY little gains unless you forget smog compliance and make a lot of internal engine modifications.

Things that make measurable differences are:

1) Good software

2) RS cams & RS intake valves

3) RS lightweight flywheel & clutch kit

4) Close-ratio gears

After all thats done, only then I'd consider making it a 3.8,....:) :)

A friend recently rebuild his 993 engine with:

*3.8 Cylinders with rsr pistons.
*new cams (Not sure what, but nothing "wild")
*Solid lifters
*new valve springs and titanium retainers.
*Carillo rods (probably not needed)
*And of cause proper tuning on a dyno with a piggyback chip.
*Supertec head studs, the original hadn't keep the tight.

It was dynoed to 330 hp.

Runs really sweetly, but it did break the bank ;)

Thanks for your time Magnus.
Can you tell me what a piggyback chip is? Sounds like it might be tied to the stock chip?

Do you have any what your friend wound up paying for this project?
I'm guessing there is some savings if I don't replace the stock components but upgrade them instead.

I'm not sure what is done in a top end rebuild.
Thanks

Piggyback is a chip that allows you to easier tune the car while still using the stock ecu.

I think the total was about $15000 in parts and valve job, every thing else he did him self.

What an ugly ,underpowered car
Quick sell it to me and buy that 996 Turbo before there aren't any left.
You can PM me for delivery instructions.

Hey mcfoo,
If it weren't for the smiley faces I might have taken your post personally. I think the car looks pretty good, underpowered yes but ugly, no way. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I do recognize the 996 have gotten a lot of bad press, and personally I don’t think they look as good as the 993 but damn it’s a turbo and at my age I’ll never be able to afford a new one.

My shop tells me the turbos don’t suffer the problems the Carerra 2 did, so it’s very tempting.

So what would you give me for my ugly 993?
