Factory Rod Bolt torque 20Nm+ 90 degrees? Really?

I am building up my crank from a 2.2 motor and the Dempsey book says that the torque settings for factory rod bolts should be 20 Nm and then 90 degrees using Loctite.
If I do that I am pushing upwards of 80-90 ft lbs of torque on those bolts when using a digital torque wrench. Is that correct? The old Porsche specs had factory rod bolts torqued at 50 Nm (36.2 ft lbs).
How can this spec have changed so significantly?

I plan on setting the final torque to 40 ft lbs with a little oil on the bolt threads. Anyone see an issue with that?

Thanks

That spec is for a 3.2 motor, not 2.2.

The Dempsey book references Appendix A for rod bolt torque specifications and there is no mention of various torque settings based on the displacement of the engine.

Are you saying that the correct torque settings for a 2.2 are 50Nm?

Off the top of my head, Yes. All the torques were the same until the Turbo 3.3 and the 3.2 when the factory went to a smaller rod bolt.

Volume 1 of the Workshop Manual Specifies 5 - 5.5 mkp which is very close to 50-55Nm and this does follow all the way to the 3.2

The 1984 Manual specifies 50Nm on Page 130-12 and recommends 20Nm + 90 degrees on Page 130-13.

I would be very surprised that adding a 90 degree rotation to an M10 x 1.25 fastener only tightened to 20Nm would result in 80 ft lbs which is almost 110Nm and would probably yield the bolt.

Something doesn't add up and I would look for the issue with the measurment.
