How to remove intake manifold - in Car
Decided (maybe foolishly) to try to remove the intake manifold to check the gaskets (looking for vacuum leak). I have removed all of the bolts I could see, unhooked the throttle body and other bits and pieces that are hung on the top of the manifold. I thought it would then just pop-off the studs but it will not budge. I have NOT removed the injectors (assuming I don't have to. Is this correct??)
Is there some sneaky hidden bolt I'm missing or is there a trick to getting this off? Not much space to lever with the engine in-car. |
What car/engine are you working on? Its not unusual for the manifold to get stuck. Previous owners' use of RTV is an unfortunate common cause.
In any case, you might give a puff of compressed air around each intake prior to pulling the manifold off. Dirt, stray washers and other debris love diving into the heads whenever possible. |
Its a California car: 1988, 930 Cab with about 94K miles. I have a failure to idle problem so I'm checking all the hoses I can get my hands on. Decided today to try to pull off intake to check gaskets and spacers. It's my first Porsche and I'm a novice home mechanic (much better with people!). Trying to be careful and not break anything but the manifold seems on pretty good. Not sure how to convince it to pop off.
So far, all of the hoses and lines look really good. I'm thinking a PO did a thorough job of replacing old lines http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339081742.jpg |

The easies and fastest way to check for air leak is to spray some Quick Start around the connection and listen to see if the rpm go up. Where are you in Ottawa? http://www.canadiantire.ca/search/search_results.jsp;jsessionid=PQXG75pKpGp87FLYGYJj cqTyZ5XgTRbYGH396PXM1GxzWvZJTGvN!222430295?bmForm= form_endeca_search&bmFormID=1339086727127&bmUID=13 39086727127&bmIsForm=true&bmPrevTemplate=%2Fhome.j sp&bmHidden=OMNITURE_FROM&OMNITURE_FROM=Search&bmH idden=event26&event26=true&bmText=quick_search_ter m&quick_search_term=starting+fluid&bmSubmit=quick_ search&quick_search=&bmHidden=FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_i d&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672077 |
Not hunting but when warm will not idle. Drops rev's like a stone to zero then takes a couple of minutes before it will refire. Thinking it might be a vacuum leak but open to suggestions as the weather is too nice to have the engine in bits
Tried the carb spray but very hard to get to all the spots so started unbolting stuff, then thought it might be easy to just pop off the manifold to have a look at the gaskets. After a couple hours fussing with this I'm starting to wonder. I'm in central Ottawa, Island Park area. Where are you? Would be good to have a local to bounce questions off. |
Obviously related to something when it get warm, not sure about 930 but could guess in the WUR circuit.
Suggest you start a new thread on the 930 forum title "Loose Idlle when warm"... I'm in the West end, going to the NAC tonight so I'' PM you tomorrow. |
Finally manged to get the manifold off. Just needed a few choice words and some extra elbow grease. The good news is that the gaskets are fine but 4 of the 6 flanges are degraded on the engine side so that they are chipping and soft like chalk. Now that I have them out, might as well replace them. Doubt I'm getting a vacuum leak there but given the grief up to this point, might as well change them. Probably going to service the injectors while I'm at it.

If they are the same as the non turbo 86 3.2, I got 6 brand new one and 12 gaskets that you can have at PP price

The #'s fit the 88 Turbo but not sure if it's what you looking for.
I'm out in the West end, I'll PM you this morning. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1339149508.jpg |
Hey guys. Am thinking of removing my intake manifold and all things above the shroud as well. Have the Bentley manual but it certainly isn't clear as to what has to come off in order to allow this to happen. Talks around the engine removal. Any hints before I go to town on it too? Am in Kanata - should go for a coffee one of these days before it snows...

No real sequence. I'm guessing that your are doing it while the engine is in the car. I had to do it when my VR went South. Start with the air blower, then the air filter/MAF and so on... I'm next door in Stittsville, I can drop by (or vice versa) and go over it. |
The Carrera insulators and the Turbo are completely different.
The turbo insulator holds the injector, screws into insulator Bruce |

You are correct... Back in June I stop by his place and he had the correct one on order. A screw down the intake was the problem at the time but a shopvac fix that problem. I should stop by to see how he is doing. |
