Dirty oil? 3.2 rebuild.
Hello everybody!
I put in a thread on my topic in the technical section: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/688194-name-sound.html I have now put the engine on a stand, so I will keep you posted to what I find once I'm in there. Chime in any pointers you may have! |
Today I inspected what I could so far. Looks like the cams are toast. But that to me is not the culprit for the noise I had.
I think that I must have gotten water and debris in my oil when the oil breather hose was unplugged. It may have been unplugged for quite a while. it came undone "by it self". But it is my fault for not securing it properly. So the tension is building: Is the crank OK? What could make that sound? Are the pistons OK? and so on... Some pics of the cams lobes. They all looked like this: http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...715_182858.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...715_182833.jpg |
Doesnt look to good. Have You drained the oil? If You have water in oil, it will show. Instead of dark, brown, it will be more light and "creamy". If water is your problem, your crank could be damaged to... Didnt you have bad idling with that hose off? On my sc the idle turn unstable when oilfill cap is off.
On bigger diesel engines (caterpillar) we had some problems with badly worn, damaged lobes on one camshaft. That made a quite hard, knocking sound...but looking at the pictures, the wear on your camlobes doesnt look terrible, only bad. |
Hi there
I drained/replaced the oil long ago. I think the damage was done last year. And now the symptoms are showing. Got some more work done today. I found rust in the engine. And that is probably why I had the noise. (chain rattle) Looks like one of the tensioners had rusted enough to impede the piston in the tensioner. All bearing surfaces seem badly worn to me. I believe my theory stands stronger after todays effort... Water in the oil is to me a good explanation to why I have both rust and bad wear all over. -I think... Having a hard time keeping an optimistic approach here. I got the case split today. Looks very good. The only thing that was not so good, was bits of plastic stuck underneath the oil pump input. I guess they are from the chain guide that has got some beating by the chain. So crisis over for now.
|
I had the these plastic pieces all over my screen too. Turbo pump in sc engine. Good that the crank was ok. New cams, and maybe You should send the cam housings for decision, hopefully its enough to only polish them? What oil was used?
|
The oil was Mobil1 rally formula 5W50.
Think I'm going for a 20W50 "classic oil" next time. I measured the cam housings. They are good for a polish. (Within specs) The cams and rockers will go to dougherty I think. (probably DC20 profile) |

One of the guys over on the tech forum mentioned that it could be a chain tensioner causing the initial sound, good call. Hope you get it all back together soon.:) Anthony. |
