rocker arm shaft backining out of carrier
I was doing a valve adjustment on the exhaust valves and noticed one of the rocker arm shafts partially backed out of the cam carrier.
Whats the best way of putting it back in place while the engine is in the car? It is the number 1 exhaust rocker that has moved. I dont want to remove the cam chain housing to get at the pinch bolts. I dont know if I can get a allen wrench in there but looking for ideas. I installed the RSR seals when I rebuilt the engine last year. Cannot believe the shaft walked on me. Lucky to have caught it before the rocker arm got damaged. Fred

Thats part of doing a valve adjustment, looking to see where the rocker shafts are. If you notice, there is a large boss side and a narrow boss side supporting the shaft. Properly installed the narrow side should have the rocker shaft level or just above level.
Proper installation calls for the 5mm head to be to the inside of the engine so you can handle tightening or releasing tension on the shaft. Occasionally I find 5mm to be to the sheet metal or cam box side so I have a 5mm cut down so I can get on the hexhead to move the shaft. Bruce |

Make sure the rocker is off the cam. Loosen the rocker shaft pinch bolt. Push the shaft back to the proper place (as described above). Tighten pinch bolt as tight as you can by hand.

This is pretty common on rebuilt engines. The rocker shaft holes in the cam tower get enlarged from the shafts being tightened numerous times. Eventually some of them get opened up enough that no amount of tightening will stop them from walking. Turbokraft has a set of rocker locks you can get to prevent the shafts from walking. My cam towers have several that keep moving. So I had to get them. Without the locks your only other choice if they keep doing this is to goop up the shaft ends with silicone to keep them in place. Try tightening it up and if it moves again then you will have to get the locks or goop them in place. I have a couple shortened allen wrenches for the same purpose.

thanks for the info Ken, and my engine has been rebuilt at least 2 times before as the cam carriers and case have some signs of being beat on. Lots of dinged surfaces and scratches that did not make me too happy.
I managed to cut down an allen wrench and a socket allen to fit inside the spaces to get at the bolts. I installed the bolts correctly as flat6pac pointed out so it was not that difficult once the tools were modified. I tightened the hell out of it, no torque wrench this time....so we see if it holds. I will keep an eye on it next valve adjustment. Fred
