"system 1" oil filter cleaning interval
 

Anyone have any experience or recommendations here?

Running 3.8 RSR motor less ITB's... race only.

The main purpose for using these filter systems on race cars is to facilitate inspection after every race weekend for any trash in the system. This allows one to forestall any serious problem that might result in a catastrophic engine failure.

For that reason, we always remove the filter to closely inspect them after every event.

Thanks Steve... In my case I have fine screen oil filter in the front of the car before the oil coolers to protect them in case of failure. I do check that after each event.

Guess it couldn't hurt to check system 1 filter to. ...I'd been told by them that they filter finer particles if they get a little dirty.

What Steve said is the primary reason I bought replaceable element filters (I have two Canton filters on my newly rebuilt 3.2SS) so I can more easily inspect the filter media. That said, i'm not saying cutting apart a stock filter is all that hard. A quality filter cutter is relatively inexpensive.

In addition to the inspect-ability of these filters, I chose them because of their full-flow feature. It's my understanding that under high flow conditions, the stock filters can operate in bypass mode quite frequently? If that is indeed the case, then the stock filters are not filtering as much as one would like them to?

The stock filters only bypass when they are left on the car too long. :)

Thats just one reason why I advocate no more than 3K between oil & filter changes for street cars. Race engines are a totally different situation and they get changed much more often.

Steve (or others) -- What do you recommend for standard oil filter replacement interval on race motors? What Kevin mentions (about operating in bypass) is the primary reason I decided to go with System1.

The system 1 filters go down to 30 microns, but I believe standard filters provide filtering down to 10-20 microns (at least according to Fram site). My logic was if standard filters occasionally operate in bypass mode (maybe on startup when oil is thick), then I'm better off filtering all the time with slighly larger particle size. Also, I'm running gt3 oil pump so thought flow from it might force bypass also.

Thoughts on logic?

If I'm only gaining ability to easily inpsect with system1 with slightly less filtering effic, then maybe I'll just go with stock filter and change very frequently since I already have screen filter I can inspect before my oil coolers.

In my case the engine filter is my only "fine" oil filter. ...meaning I do not have one on oil tank like most 993's. pics of both below (motor one obviously before I changed to system1).

Maybe in lieu of that Canton cannister filter, if you'd like to install a finer typical can-style OEM, you could use a 964 filter console like this

They're pretty cheap used. It uses the same 1970something (72?) thru-94 filter that most of the air cooled cars have on their factory oil tanks. I've picked up a couple of them in the past year for less than $100 ea. It has large 30mm metric fittings so you could use AN-12 or AN-16 hose with metric fittings. Or use those nice Goodridge adapter fittings that convert the pesky 30mm Porsche fittings to AN

Reason i've been collecting these is to use on cars that have eliminated the factory rear mounted tank in exchange for the typical Peterson or Smart Racing front mounted tank.
