993 chain covers - will these seal or leak?

Chasing down a pair of leaking chain covers - the patient is a '96 C2.

Pictures tell the story -

Leaks appear to be caused by the mag itself deteriorating:

presumed magnesium grime:

After a good bead blasting, pitting remains on just about every gasket surface. Cam boxes look better but not much:

Hoping someone can confirm that their chain covers looked similar &

1) didn't leak when reassembled w/ new gaskets

or

2) leaked & I should start $hopping for new parts if a dry-ish car is to be in my future.

re: magnesium finishes - is the original gray color on the chain covers (& fan shroud) a coating or just patina? Wasn't able to find much info about refinishing - don't want to powdercoat or paint the insides.

Thanks!
