911 Cyl Head fitting
Hi,
Having fitted the barrels to my engine, I am now in the process of fitting the cyl heads. Having read Walts book, there is no mention as to whether I should use Loctite 574, or similar, on the head gaskets. I understand that it is not normal practice to use any gasket compound, but having twelve, yes twelve, headstuds broken on the engine...which has stood for at least ten years., The action of the blown gaskets is to mark the outer lip of the barrels, and the mating surface of two of the heads ever so slightly. There is no problem with the grooves in the cylinder head, nor the contact surface where the gasket actually seals against the cylinder head surface. My thoughts are that a little of one of the gasket sealers would be better than nothing. I think that the engine had had work done on it before, as the pistons ring grooves were in very good condition size wise, and still very clean, with no wear on the ring grooves. I suspect that the bolts had not been tightened after the standard 1000 miles and general lack of maintenance. I do not think that the damage warranted all the heads and cylinders be re machined. Can anyone share their views. Thanks, Geoff |

I would stay away from the sealants.
Have the heads and barrel tops cleaned up (on a mill) and get thicker base gaskets to bring the piston to head clearance back to original. Bob
