Repairing stripped engine mount hole on Magnesium case
Hello,
Does anyone here have experience repairing a stripped, lower engine mount hole on an early magnesium case. I have a Time-Sert I would like to install, but the hole depth of the stock threads is 26.5 mm and the drill for installation of the Time-Sert is 37.5 mm. I don't know if I can get away with drilling the hole and additional 11 mm. Attached is a photo...any help is appreciated. ![]() [img] |

Use a drill stop on the drill bit and set it to a little deeper than the depth of the insert. Unless you're using the VW Case kit, which has the chamfer built into the drill bit. In that case, set the drill stop to your depth, then put the chamfer on with the correct size chamfer bit.
If you use this kit, just set it to the depth you need for the insert https://www.amazon.com/Time-Sert-M10x1-5-Thread-Repair-1015/dp/B00OJDV58K |

I'm sure you thought of this, but make sure you are straight when you do the procedure. It's easy with hand tools to do it at an angle, which will create fitment problems.

Hi
I would suggest that you install a special stepped repair stud which is M12 at one end and M10 at the other. Maintain the original depth of the hole. This repair method will remove the minimum amount of material from the case. Cheers |
