Flywheel roll pin
 

I just received my 3.2 crankshaft back from the machinist. It's been cross-drilled, magnafluxed, micropolished, measured, checked for straightness, galley plugs removed, cleaned and replaced. It's a beautiful work of art!

My question: The roll pin used to locate the flywheel to the crank was not returned with the crankshaft. Is this pin necessary? What is its intended purpose? Is it simply to hold the flywheel in place while the bolts are installed and tightened? or is it used to insure the flywheel is "clocked" to the crank correctly for balancing purposes? Is this pin necessary for alignment or will the bolts take care of that once tightened? In short, can I install the flywheel without the pin or should I try to find a replacement?

On the 3.2 Motronic, the flywheel must be clocked to the crank to send the proper once per rev signal to the crank sensor.

Its a locator pin but the flywheel can only go on one way with 9 flywheel bolts so it tends not to be necessary.
