993 - p/s pump seals & crank bolt
Have a few questions -
1) Is the crank pulley bolt meant to be installed dry, oiled, or w/ Optimoly HT (as with the cams)? TQ = 170Nm 2) What is the expected resistance when installing the p/s pump drive seal? Slips in by hand or should a press be used? (#4 below): ![]() I was able to push a replacement in by hand.. the last time I encountered a seal this easy to press-in (on a different car, incorrect p/n supplied), an oily mess was the result. The seal I used was an original Porsche part. 3) same as Q 1 for the p/s pulley bolt (#7 above) - dry, oiled, or other? TQ = 120Nm Last edited by tom_s; 09-17-2012 at 04:48 AM.. |

1. Not sure which bolt you mean?
In the picture #9 is 25nm and loctite 270 If its the crank bolt at the v pulley end of the crankshaft, in the 964 manual is says; a thin coat of oil on the threads and mating surface of the bolt. The surfaces between crank taper and pulley wheel must be grease free. M14 bolt @ 235nm using special tool to counterhold. 2. I did one of those seals recently on my 964, similar setup, wasn't too hard to push in by hand, required a tap with a socket to seat squarely though. Lots of thick Olista Longtime EP2 grease on the sealing lip. I read in a few places these go in fairly easy. 3. I used copper anti-seize on the cam bolt #7, as per the book, 120nm on the 964. Used a big screwdriver between the spokes to counter hold the lower sprocket instead of the special tool. Last edited by alexjc4; 09-17-2012 at 09:47 AM.. |

1. yes - crankshaft pulley bolt, not pictured above. 993 uses a flat (non-tapered) fit @ pulley to crank interface. 170Nm is specified for the crank bolt - no mention of whether this is a dry fit or other?
2. Did yours leak afterward? I was expecting to tap it in as with most other seals. To my surprise, it slipped right in by hand. Might just be the way it is, seemed too easy so looking for confirmation.. 3. Thanks, 993 manual doesn't mention anything on the threads for this bolt. The bolt securing the cam chain sprocket gets Optimoly HT + 120Nm (in one section of the manual, but 20Nm + 90deg in another..). can you confirm this is for the bolt securing the p/s pump drive pulley? anyone have a real 993 shop manual? I'm not so impressed w/ my PDF copy anymore.. |

1. Ah yes of course the 993 crank is different, so can't help you there I'm afraid.
2. Engine is not back in the car yet but there was just enough friction for me not to worry, i didn't use any sealant or lube on the outside of the seal, did you also fit yours dry? 3. Yup the spec was for the p/s pulley bolt. Last edited by alexjc4; 09-17-2012 at 08:08 PM.. |
