1969 2.0S to 2.2S conversion
 
Hey guys,
New to the forum, and I need some help.
Bought a '69 911S in '74 and parked it in my garage in '76. It's been there ever since. In '82 I rebuilt the engine with almost all new parts. I put in a new set of Mahle 2.2S P/C and had the 2.0S heads cut for the 2.2 head gasket. All work done by Ray Litz. At the time this was a popular conversion, but looking back, I could have got the 2.0S P/C for the same price ($1,100) and am now wondering if I did the right thing. I figured that the gasoline available was getting worse and a little lower compression and extra displacement would be a good thing. I had Jerry Fairchild rebuild my MFI to 2.2 specs and install a 2.2S mapping cam. Everything else was left the same with the addition of Turbo chain tensioners. The engine has never had any fluid in it and has only been rotated a few times in the last 30 years.
Now I am starting to put the car back on the road with a full restoration, and need some advice about the engine. Is the present combination going to be down on HP or should I just run it as is. I am planning to take it apart because the builder did not put the oil screens in (I forgot to give them to him) and I figure after this long, it should be checked out before running.
I have the opportunity to buy a set of 2.4 heads that have 32mm ports, so they will have to be ported to 36/35 to match the 2.2S heads. Is this a bolt on thing, or are their changes to sheet metal, rocker boxes etc. that I am going to have to deal with. Is the valve angle the same?
I would like to retain the appearance of the stock engine.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The oil screens should not be reused. The plastic edge decomposes and the bits can eventually find their way thru to the squirters.

I would pick up the 2.4 heads and finish the 2.2 conversion. They would be bolt on wioth no mods required.

Save the 2.0 liter heads if you want to go back. You would need to weld the heads or buy a custom set of cylinders to match them up

Thanks for the reply. Someone on the Early S Registry said that this combo (2.0 head with 2.2 pistons resulted in 7.5 to 1 compression, way down from the 9.8 stock. I pretty much decided to go with the 2.4 heads.
Just one more thing, are the combustion chambers the same in all the 2.2 and 2.4 heads, or do I need to find a certain one. The seller has told me that they are 2.4 heads and have 32mm ports, which means they are either T or E heads. So if the chambers are the same, after porting I should have the equivalent of a 2.2S 2.4S head, right?

1970 through 1973 combustion chambers are same. Port sizes differ. It's a lot of work to port those though.

Bob,

Valve size and combustion chambers are the same so you get a 1mm increasw in valve dia over the 69s.

I can port the intakes and it looks like you are relatively local. Give me a call if you want to swing by.
