911 Engine Overhaul and more
Hi all. I'm looking to get some advice and direction on where to go with my 1969 911S. I got it from a guy that had it in storage for 30+ years. The engine is locked up, and after boroscoping the engine, rust inside the cylinders is moderate. I have already purchased the book, and plan to get all of the tooling to perform the overhaul. Some of my questions are:
I am sure that it is better to send the original cylinders and components to the shop to have them re-worked. If they are beyond repair, what does buying different parts do as far as affecting the value? It has MFI, and I've heard that there have been problems with this system. Any information is appreciated. Outside of the engine, the car is in good shape considering the age. Three areas of concern is the front left fender, belly pans, and one spot on the right rear fender with rust. I have a replacement fender that just needs paint. What is the difficulty in replacing the belly pans, and what is the best way to fix the right rear fender? Thanks in Advance. Dave |

Until it's disassembled and measured, you can't really tell. As the prices of early 911S's have gone through the roof, I'd be sure to do things right with no shortcuts.
The replacement panels should be available through Restoration Design. Also, the MFI system is great, just has to be properly set up and adjusted. If it's been sitting for that many years, it should be totally rebuilt by a professional. It's not a job for a ham-fisted technician (no disrespect implied on anyone's abilities!) that has never tackled a MFI pump before. With the whole project, do it correctly and you'll love the final results. Keep posting on your progress! |
