Thermostat test question

Rebuilding my 1984 911 3.2 engine and as per book tried testing thermostat to see if internal mechanism opens when hot. They say on hot plate I tried fry pan on stove. How hot does it need to get? Thanks

Another question. Can you get parts to rebuild this internal thermostat? I see you can get kit for external thermo. $50 VS $150.

It needs to be soaking in a pan of water and open as it comes to a boil. Water boils at 212F and the t-stat should open around 180-190F if I remember.

You can replace the internal element in the t-stat in the wheel well but have to disassemble the thing first. Removing those big slotted caps is tuff and they get damaged easily cause they are aluminum and tend to seize the threads.

good luck.

Thanks that worked and saw the movement.

burgermeister here on the forums informed us that the regulator inside the engine is basically the same as the regulator in the external t-stat

T-stat test question

I am rebuilding my 2.4E. As stated in Waynes rebuild book, I put my engine t-stat on a hot plate and sure enough the t-stat opened completely. The hot plate was set on high. I am completely satisfied that mine is working fine.
