Early sandcast engine case

Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to why someone thinks they might get $49000 DOLLARS for one of these? A misprint surely?

Old story...you can ask whatever you want for the object...but it is only worth the amount someone will pay for it.
So...if the only offer you get on a wheelbarrow sized diamond is $10 ... then that establishes the price of diamonds of that size!
I know where there is an original Maserati 3500GT....barn find...all there...has not been run in something like 40 years.
It's high and dry...covered...and as far as I can tell..inhibited properly.
It would need everything done to get it back to running condition...but the owner wants $1.0 Million for it!
He will never get it...but in his mind that's the price.

Yes, I understand the concept of something being worth only what someone is prepared to pay - but in this case, the vendor has over 700 sales to his credit and over 500 items currently listed and has a long (10+ years) track record and probably knows what he's on about. He must recognise something about this case that eludes me:(

A more "normal" value would be $4900.
Otherwise I should send away the damaged case (-65) for repair thats been hanging around my garage...

BTW, it really bothers me when people says that they have a "1964" 911 when in reality, its a model year 1965....

I agree completely! Sure, some were built in the latter part of '64, but they were all'65 911s. My car was built in the latter half of 1967 but it is of course a '68 911. I'd be crazy to claim otherwise. All this revisionist history about early 911s is ridiculous.

And I'd take another zero off the price of that case. $490 sounds about right.

Unfortunately usual going rate for early aluminium cases is ~1000-2000$ or more.

If someone knows, where to get it under $1000, please chime in, I could really make use of it.

I'll buy any usable early aluminum engine case that someone would like to part with for $1000!!
Anything under $2000 is a steal.

Yes, it seems $2K+ is the going rate and I've seen them for a lot more. But $49k is still a huge puzzle...

I've heard the Pope and Madonna have both kissed this case with their bare lips at the same time. Hence the price tag.

This must be the one that Jesus tea bagged. :D

Lapkritis 03-27-2013 03:25 AM

It very well could be. I always get those two cases confused with the case Ferdinand whittled by hand with a jewelers' file from a raw casting. There's no great way to tell them all apart because they're all priced the same at around $50g.

HawgRyder 03-27-2013 10:10 AM

Ummm...is the packing inside the case a fine white powder?
