Cranking new engine for oil pressure......
When first turning a rebuilt engine over to develop initial oil pressure, should the spark plugs be in or out? With the plugs in, there is no chance of anything getting into a cylinder. On the other hand, with plugs out, the engine will spin over faster. So, which is the preferred method?
Thks,

Plugs out normally...but that will "wash" the assembly lube off some parts.

Before we start any engine on the dyno, we crank the engine with the plugs out, as to not load the rod bearings. They free spin at about 250 rpm and develop oil pressure rather fast. Just our routine.

On my recent rebuild I did it plugs-out and the pressure built quickly (I did not time it, but I would say ~7 to 10 seconds?) FWIW this was a full rebuild (top and bottom end).
As long as things are clean around the motor, there should be little chance of ingesting anything. |
