If I recall, there are 4 ringlets in 3 different sizes, and each size only fits one of the three posts (which are also different sizes).

The 2 that are the same size are ground - one is the big ground strap, one is the ground for the heater blower - and they fit in the medium sized stud. The big one is +12v, and the little (blue?) one is excitation.

Small blue, top post, brown ground wires lower left, red wire lower right. As seen looking from the back.

Dude! Never, I mean NEVER blame it on your kid. Bless GOD that you have a kid in your life. Never blame.

Sorry, RANT over.

The headline took me for a LOOP. You can figure out alternator wiring almost by simply looking at the wire ring loops on the wire harness. They only should fit one way.

Here's a pic from when I took apart my 74:

In case you need a little reinforcement - from my '87. Just like Peppy's but different angle.

I have 2 as well. No matter how mad I get, I try not to show it. They grow up way too fast.

The blue wire is connected to the alternator lamp in one of the gauges. It is required in order for the alternator to charge. I believe that some refer to it as the exciter.

Thanks for the info

Alternator wiring.......

When I removed the alternator from my engine, I used a Sharpie pen to label each wire position. Now, if it has to come off again, there will not be any question about which wire goes where!

kids

Keep the kids till they produce grandkids. That's when life gets really good.
My 8 year old grandson thought dropping the engine from the Porsche was the coolest thing he ever helped with.
