901 airbox compatibility for various displacements
 

I'm not sure where is the best place to ask this question, so I'm going to ask it here.

Background: my car has a 2.4L motor, although it originally came with a 2.0L motor oh so long ago. I would like to find an airbox that is correct for my car as it came from the factory.

My question is: Would an airbox from a 2.0L motor fit on a 2.4L motor, or is there some issue (like for instance that the engine's stroke is longer so the carburettors are spaced just a little further apart) that prevents me from fitting an earlier airbox on the 2.4L motor?

Yes, a steel air box from 69-70.5 will fit. The engine dimensions did not change between most of the aircooled engines.

Aaron, I'm actually thinking of a plastic airbox, since that's what came on 914s. Thanks for your response..

While the air boxes might fit, the tubs that connect the intakes (carbs or FI) may not be entirely compatible.

The later 71T had a plastic air box too, The hold down clamps may be the only issue you may have to deal with.

I have a customer that has one on his car. I will try to get some details for you.

I think I'd also have to get the parts that bolt to the carbs, then maybe the hold down clamps would match?

I think he is talking about bases that bolt to the carbs, I have heard them called "boats" or "tubs"

If you can find the whole assembly then you are good to go.

The plastic carbureted air box I saw had cold start plumbing for the Zenith carburetors. I am not sure if the 914/6 ran a cold start with the Webers.

Aaron thanks for your help. Webers don't have cold start. So they are two different airboxes and I need to make sure I get the airbox for Webers?

If Weber equipped cars did not run the cold start then yes. Since the 911's were Zenith equipped, then you would be trying to track down 914/6 Air box.

Now if you do not care about removing the cold start from the Air box then you have quite a bit easier time finding what you are looking for.

A lot of the cold start systems were removed long ago.

My 914-6 does have the small grommets for the cold start system, though they were never offered on the Weber carbureted 914-6 2.0. I understand that the top of the 914-6 air box was also not as tall as that found in the 911s, but I think they all will fit in a 911
