oil consumption

Hi guys,

I think this forum is the best for engine related questions...

What is the benchmark regarding oil consumption during track days?

My engine has been rebuild 5000km ago, and I'm looking for a reference point on this matter.

The "olden" days for spirited street driving had it at 1-2 quarts every 600 miles.

For track days, you'll be better off measuring in increments of time rather than distance. My non-Porsche race engines burn about 1 pint every 1.5-2 hours. Air-cooled 911 engines will probably burn more than that on the track.

My fresh track engine uses about 1 quart per 4 hours on the track.

It is difficult to follow up real consumption because I think that my reading are inconsistent due to the fact that I have a large front oil cooler.
Is this possible ?
Also on the road I experienced this.
Last time on track I added 200 to 300ml for 3x20 minutes

You can measure your oil level accurately enough to add 300ml?!?

My dipstick readings vary by +/- 500ml just based on oil temperature.

My stock but rebuilt 3.2 burns about 2 qt / 3800 miles, which includes 8 hours of track use. Track oil consumption is about 1 qt / 7-8 hours based on a 3 day weekend I had in June. But as it's a stock motor with stock gearing, I'm usually between 4000 & 6200 RPM, not up in the stratosphere like the race-car folks.

Indeed it is very difficult, probably it is very sensitive to temps and thermostat opening.
The temp on my gauge is even on track always just below the first mark.

Because the engine has been rebuilt, I'm very concerned to take care for it.

Hi,

Today another trackday in pouring rain, so no aggressive driving.

For 100 min effective track time I estimate consumption higher than 400ml.

How did I measured: I filled an extra 400ml th get the level gauge almost in the same position before I started. Almost. It think that 500ml would be more or less...

Am I anal about this?

Any suggestion how to follow up or measure would be great.

Thanks.

André
