Tensioner shim/washer order
I've got my cam timing set and pulled out the baggies with the tensioners. Realized I didn't take good notes/pics.. I have one standard washer and a thin spring steel one. I assume one or both go between the idler arm and the tensioner? I looked at the PET, and searched the site no joy...
Grateful in advance for any help - guess I'll put on the oil cooler... |
Hi K,
Dont know if this helps...I took mine apart a couple weeks ago but from what I remember the only place a washer was...the nut holding the tensioner, maybe the pic helps http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1374956957.jpg |
Thanks
It helps if that was just after you took it off. I'm talking about the part that goes ove the idler arm shaft. Makes most sense for washer and shim to go between the tensioner and the arm since there is movement there Thanks |
No, there is supposed to be some movement. Coincidently, I am in the garage upgrading my 2.7 to hydraulic tensioners. There is only the wave washer and nut that hold the tensioner in place. I just took mine apart and snapped this crappy pic:

On a 77, if you havent upgraded the idler arms with the thicker arm, there is a about 10mm washer going between the idler and the big end of the tensioner.

Take a good look inside the idler arm bore. If it's not bushed with a bushing sleeve (bronze-like), then I would recommend NOT installing the idlers. Unbushed arms are a failure waiting to happen and are what gave the chain tensioners a bad name. The arm binds on the shaft and galls both the shaft and the bore.
You can get newer wide idler arms like Bruce mentions, or you can send your old narrow arms to Henry @ Supertec for a credit towards upgraded arms he makes with a wide Oilite bushing insert. |
