3.6 Deck Heights
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 3.6 motor. I'm at the point of determining the deck heights of each piston. In so doing, I have determined that my deck heights are in the range of 1.10 to 1.2 mm. I used a dial indicator to determine TDC on each piston, and then used a caliper to determine the deck heights. I took four readings on each piston at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions on each piston. In general, the deck heights were in a rather narrow band, between about 1.1 to 1.2 mm. Wayne suggests that 1.25 to 1.50 mm is the acceptable range for smaller engines. Lacking any specs on what is acceptable for a 3.6 motor, am I OK with this clearance? And, what are my options if this clearance is insufficient?

Hi Ernie,
You are good to go. ![]() I like to see 1mm (.040) deck height as anything over 1.3mm can make an engine more prone to detonate. Hope this helps,

Thanks Steve. Sounds like I am OK then. I'll start to assemble the heads and cam towers this weekend. Hope to have this motor done in the next two months! Thanks for all your help.
