so close yet so far

f ing disaster. I am putting the distributor on my nearly completed 2.4 and I push too hard and the f ing top bolt in the engine stand pulls from the case. The bottom bolt bends then snaps leaving my engine on the tray a foot from where it had been seconds earlier.

I think the engine is OK. I need to fix the two bolts. Both will need new threads. So how do I do this? The top bolt came out with a helicoil on it so the hole is pretty big. Is there a case saver type option for bolts this size? I assume I need a fix with long threads (that go deep into the case as these are big bolts)

Whats my best option?

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry to hear that.

I hope that your engine id fine apart from the studs.

Did you use the proper engine stand/adapter?

Yes, I am using the porsche yolk. Totally my stupid fault. What was I thinking. I should have put the distributor in when the engine was in the car. Of course this was going to happen if I push on the end of the engine. It's only held on by two bolts.

Moving on....need to fix it.

Time sert or other type of thread repair could work.

I have rebuilt a motor that suffered a similiar failure. The solution a previous spanner jockey had used was very elegant. They /He /She had drilled out and tapped the case where the m10 studs had pulled to m12 the made inserts with m12 outside and m10 inside . These had been fitted to the case with studlock.

Admittedly the insert was thin on its walls but it had lasted well. Very like using a time sert or case saver to be honest but a home made solution

just ordered a kit from Time Sert.

the 5015 F Big-Sert kit
10X1.5X20 Big-Serts and everything to install them. Just hope I don't f it up like I usualy do when trying to do these thread inserts.
